Applications are invited for two Ph.D. positions in Distributed Fault Diagnosis for Large-Scale Nonlinear Stochastic Systems. The positions are with the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, and the students will work under the supervision of Dr. Ioannis Raptis.

This project will establish a mathematical framework for the design of distributed model-based fault-sensitive filters for complex processes. Estimation-based filters will be designed that can identify and isolate faults that occur in large-scale nonlinear systems. Information fusion techniques will be applied to the distributed formulation of the fault-sensitive filters, to obtain global inference for the health of the system from local information gathering. The algorithms should be computationally attractive such that they satisfy the processing constraints of existing embedded systems. The research has analytical, computational and experimental components. The results of this work will be disseminated to contemporary large-scale systems of interest such as mobile robots, power grid systems, water distribution networks, and transportation systems. The derived algorithms will be validated using an actual sensor network that will monitor a test-bed physical system with distributed subcomponents.

Students from all majors relevant to estimation theory, control systems, computer science, and applied mathematics are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to students with strong background in signal processing, nonlinear dynamic systems, and probability theory. Excellent communication skills (written and oral) are required for these positions.

The assistantship includes a tuition waiver and a graduate student stipend. Review of submissions will begin immediately. -Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, aerospace engineering, mathematics, computer science, or a closely related area.

-Excellent mathematical background preferably in probability theory, signal processing, and nonlinear systems theory.

-Good programming skills in



-Good English communication skills (written and oral).

-Ability to conduct independent research.
